Production companies Sony Pictures and Disney announced this Friday, September 27, the decision to work together in a new Spider-Man movie starring renowned actor Tom Holland. A month ago, both companies had ended negotiations to make films about the intrepid Marvel arachnid.

Sony Pictures, owner of the rights to Spider-Man, and Disney, current owner of Marvel Studios, plan to release this new film on July 16, 2021, to continue with the sequences of featured films Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Both films, with Tom Holland at the helm, raised more than $2 billion worldwide.

Within the guidelines of the agreement between Sony Pictures and Disney, it is established that the popular hero will continue to appear in the upcoming Marvel Studios films, as was done with Avengers: Endgame (2019).

“I am delighted that Spidey’s journey continues in the Marvel film universe,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said Friday in a statement collected by US media.

“Spider-Man is a powerful icon and a hero whose story goes through all ages and audiences worldwide. In addition, he is the only hero with the superpower of crossing cinematic universes, so as long as he continues to develop his own ‘Spidey-verse’ you never know what surprises the future holds,” he added.

“We had a great collaboration over the past four years, and our mutual desire to continue was the same as many fans,” said Sony Pictures Entertainment Communications Chief, Robert Lawson. “We are delighted to move forward together,” he added.

Sony and Disney agreed in 2015 that the films in which “Spidey” was the main character would be from Sony, a company that would receive most of the benefits, in exchange to Disney incorporating the superhero into the film sagas of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rumors in the media did not wait, most said that the break on August was due to Disney expecting 50% of the revenue from the “Iron-Spider” movies, this proposal was rejected by Sony.

For now, the financial details of the new agreement reached between Sony Pictures and Disney have not been disclosed. But the return of the controversial arachnid is already a reality. Spider-Man’s fans wait for him!
