The Internet is currently the principal information source for everyone: doesn’t matter what it is, you can find at least some information about it on the web. Most of the people who’re looking for information online, use Google search. When it comes to the number of users, Google is by far the favorite, but even when all of this is true, there’s still a lot of users who don’t really know how to make an effective search, that’s why we’re going to give you a few hacks to make the most out of your research.
1) Pay attention to the settings button
Most of the people don’t even notice it, but the truth is that the button is right next to the search bar. There you can configure the searching results (like setting which country’s websites you want to be shown on the results, or the result’s language, among other details), that way it will take you less time to find what you’re looking for.
2) The quotes may be essential
This is one of the popular tricks out there: if you search something on Google using quotes, you will find websites that repeat the exact same words in the exact same order. This is especially useful if you’re trying to find results with a specific phrase. Also, if you don’t remember all the words, you can place an asterisk as replacement for a word; this way, Google will show you all the variation of the phrase. This may be extremely helpful if you’re trying to find a song you heard, but you don’t remember the exact lyrics. For example: “My hands and feet are * than before.”
3) Use the DEFINE tool
This is also a well-known hack. If you want to search for the definition of a word, you should type “DEFINE: + the word you want to define.” Google will show you the word meaning, as well as the etymology of it. Plus, you can write slang words too or even acronyms, Google will still find it in most of the cases. Here are some examples: “DEFINE: grass,” “DEFINE: homie,” “DEFINE: CIA.”
4) Get the right image
When you’re looking for pictures on the Google images bar, you can type the size of the image beside the name of the thing you’re searching. For example, if you type “Cake 2000×2000” the results will show you cakes’ designs that adapt to the specified size. Using this strategy, you will be able to find the wanted image in no time. It’s pretty useful if you’re searching for a new wallpaper for your PC or mobile device. Try typing the name of a band or videogame you like, and add the size you want.
5) Use Google as a calculator
Instead of using Google to find a calculator, you can directly propose a math problem. You can write simple problems like “123 + 8232” or more complex problems such as “73637 * 312/22.” Google will show you the problem solved, as well as an online calculator to solve new math problems.
6) Use the related tool
This one works in a similar way as the “define” option described before. If you like a website, and you want to find others similar, you can use the Google bar to do it, all you need to do is type “related: + the website” and Google will show you similar pages. For example, when you type “related:walmart.com,” the results will offer you a list of places similar to Walmart.
7) Few words might be enough
Sometimes there’s no need to be too specific, by using the right words you can get exactly what you need. For example, instead of typing: “Where are the Disney’s parks located around the world?” you can simply type: “Disney parks locations.” Doing this, you will get the same results without writing too much.
Now you know how to make a better search on Google.
