Virtual Reality vs. Augmented Reality: What Are the Differences?

Publicidad

Nowadays, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are not strange concepts anymore; these have become a trend that is gaining more and more strength in the technology field. However, despite its growing popularity, many times, people do not know the difference between these two technologies, which is why this time we will talk about the differences between them.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality is based on adding new things to our reality; not about changing it, but about mixing a new artificial reality to our world, optimizing our own reality with the use of this technology. AR can have a lot of applications, and we have all seen many of these in films or fictional series that develop in a hypothetical future. However, today, this technology is advancing in a good way.

On March 23 of this year, we saw that thanks to augmented reality a dragon flew through a Baseball stadium in Korea, an event that all spectators could enjoy through sports broadcast channels for baseball fans, as this was broadcast live.

But AR is not only useful for show business, but it can also be implemented for everyday life, and it is here where augmented reality takes value. Some enterprises even want to create AR glasses to replace some functions of smartphones, does it sound too ambitious? Maybe, but if anything shows that augmented reality has potential, are the attempts of large companies to develop this technology. Microsoft, Amazon, Google, ever heard about them?

This is a Google announcement from 6 years ago, thought the result of these glasses was not the expected one; the video is still good to get a good idea about what this technology can offer.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality’s goal is quite different; it aims to take us directly to another reality. This concept has been further explored in different series, video games, books, and movies, and no wonder why: it is very interesting. Although virtual reality can have many different uses, the VR video games market is currently one of the most important.

Just by looking at a couple of options that already exist in the market is enough to realize that VR has come to stay. Today, there are many different headsets models to enjoy; HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or the Oculus Go are some of the most popular. Even companies like Sony have developed their own virtual reality headsets and VR, so we can see it is a big deal.

On the other hand, there are many films whose main plot goes around virtual reality. One of them, Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a good option to fully explore the concept of virtual reality.

In conclusion, VR aims to transport us to an alternate reality, while AR seeks to unite an artificial reality with ours. It is clear that these technologies have not yet reached their full potential, but they are being developed rapidly, so it is worth keeping an eye on them.
