The origin of the rivalry between Intel and AMD

Intel and AMD are companies dedicated to gaming and performance-spec computer devices for PC desktops and laptops that use Windows OS or Linux platforms. iOS from Apple was on the list of devices using any of Intel’s processors, but from this year onboard, they will start to use their ARM-based silicon processor: the M1. 

Both companies have loyal fans across the globe that will talk endlessly about their new features, capacities, and details of any new processor presented by Intel or AMD. Each year these companies are looking to exceed their latest model and to bring new and modern technologies for any device. But it’s precisely these discussions that create a kind of “fanwar” among both companies’ users. So how does this rivalry start? Let’s check it out!

Early beginnings

Everything started back in the ’60s with a company called Fairchild Semiconductor. There you can find Bob Noyce and Jerry Sanders. They look how Fairchild wasn’t in its best times and decided to leave the company with a different year. Noyce left in 1968 and, with Gordon Moore, founded Intel. Meanwhile, Sanders said goodbye to Fairchild in 1969 and founded AMD. And there you have, the beginning of a neverending PC race looking for the most innovative ideas. Some were a jackpot, while others almost put them very close to ruin and bankruptcy.

Sounds fantastic, right? Both startups became two titans in the tech world. After all, primary devices depend on them. However, that race was an interesting one. In the beginning, both companies create chips that were a profitable market. Still, Intel took a step ahead when their X86 chip architecture was selected by IBM to coordinate with the MS-DOS. Everything was fine until IBM predicted a Monopoly and asked Intel to find another supplier to the chip manufacturer. AMD entered the picture and started to produce 286 chips with the license and spec given by Intel. Nevertheless, Intel wasn’t happy with it and developed 386 chips without providing the license and spec to the competition means AMD. 

What was AMD’s answer? To make a classical move called reverse engineering and study the 386 chip, this took time, and when they presented their own 386 chip named “Am386DX”, Intel was already offering their 486 chip. Although one of the great benefits of reverse engineering is to also look for innovations, and that was precisely what ADM did, their chip presented a 20% more performance than Intel’s and was very close to 486. Despite that, AMD was being killed by critics and experts. 

Modern Times

Fast forward to modern times in the 21st century. Those chips were boring and obsolete. Users were looking for a more visual approach, which means photos and videos, and the companies needed to step up their game hence the creation of the 64bits acquires, which is still used nowadays. But here is where we can see how both companies are constantly fighting to be the top companies in the world of computers. AMD was a little bit (pun intended) smarter than Intel. Their new processors were able to adapt to old systems, which Intel decided to forget, a big mistake because not every user could get that new technology. 

This was the beginning of a race that every year changed its winner, some years, AMD presented way better processors, and other years Intel had the upper hand. However, Intel invested in something that other companies tend to forget, and that was the key to their success and popularity: MARKETING! Intel was selling their products as something valuable, and they also were educating people in the world of computers because who understands what a processor is? Or how important is it to have the latest model? 

Users were buying PC desktops and laptops only because they needed one to study or work. Still, a new generation was born, one with a vast knowledge of computer systems and expected the very best in their device, primarily gaming. In these recent years, online games have become a professional sport, calling them eSports presenting a highly profitable market. Gamers can earn lots of money, and it’s expected that they can surpass professional athletes in the sponsor’s field. Intel and AMD have a vital role in the world of eSports, and they know it, so they are pushing their techs to present the best and ultimate processors for new technologies like 5G, VR, and AR. This proves that their competition and rivalry still have many years to come, except for a miracle that can easily happen in the business world. 

Intel vs. AMD: the ultimate comparison

Ok, there are some very important aspects to consider to make a comparison between these companies. Also, we think that something must be clear here, many people expert in the computer field prefer to create their PC, using different parts to create one that fulfills their dream PC, in this list can be found gamers, tech experts, engineers, graphic designers, animators, and even musical producers. All of them need the best processors for a smooth run of their favorite games and software. Still, as we stated above, the new generations practically are born with tech knowledge, and anyone from millennials to the latest gen wants the best processor. So check out the differences!

Cost

Oh, money, we want the best, but we cannot afford to spend that much money. After all, we have other bills to pay. So the newest computer models naturally come with the latest processor, but they tend to cost a lot of money. Even when you are only looking for the processor to change the old one, they are expensive. It will depend, as we already stated, on the use that you will give to that device. Performance

The performance is the most crucial aspect. If you have the money to afford one processor, you must be interested in how it works. Trust us, these processors were under many tests, but they need to be paired with a graphics card to test their performance. As you can see, AMD is winning in this aspect, their Ryzen 5, which is the lowest in performance of their latest processors, outperforms Intel’s Core i9 by two points. 

Specifications 

This aspect is a hard one to understand fully. Only the experts can give a full detailed explanation of them. But the difference is there, and it’s a big one. Moreover, with their top-tier processors, AMD is the one if you’re looking for power.

In resume, AMD is beating Intel, but I don’t think that this is the company’s end. Intel is looking for better innovations, and they still have a fantastic marketing strategy plus having top computer companies like Lenovo and HP as its partners. And with ADM, you can witness an incredible bounce back after almost going bankrupt again four years ago. Everything will depend on your decision and what you need on a PC desktop or laptop.
